EBTon: a CSIC’s programme to find scientific solutions to today’s major challenges

The CSIC’s Deputy Vice-Presidency for Knowledge Transfer (VATC), in collaboration with Fundación General CSIC (FGCSIC), has launched the EBTon project, an initiative funded by the Madrid City Council as part of the public grants’ call for the promotion of innovation 2021. Its main objective is to catalyse the creation of new technology-based companies (EBTs or spin-offs) in the city of Madrid based on CSIC technologies.

The overall aim of this initiative is to identify technological solutions based on research results and to support the transformation of a business idea into a company that provides answers to current societal challenges.

Aimed at CSIC research staff, the project will begin with a 2-day Hackathon, in which participants will be able to create multidisciplinary teams to work on the development and presentation of their business idea. During both days (25th and 26th April), they will be supported by experts in entrepreneurship, mentors who will accompany them throughout the process, as well as training sessions on entrepreneurship and the preparation and presentation of an elevator pitch.

At the end of the second day, each team will present their business model idea to the rest of the participants, mentors and experts in order to receive an initial assessment. A a maximum of eight will be selected to participate in the Pitch Competition session on May 9th. This selection, made by a jury of experts in entrepreneurship, will be determined by criteria such as the degree of innovation of the idea and whether there is industrial protection for it, its state of maturity and the time it needs to reach the market, the team involved in the project and the viability of the proposal.

During the Pitch Competition, the shortlisted teams will have to make a presentation of their proposal in PPT format, with a maximum duration of 5 minutes. The jury will select two winning projects, which will receive support from entrepreneurship advisors (mentoring) for 6 months and funding of up to €20,000 to advance their business idea and take it to market.
