Eva Jiménez Relinque, ComFuturo researcher at the Institute of Construction Sciences Eduardo Torroja (IETcc-CSIC), analyses in Madri+d whether a waste product from the steel industry can become a smart building material.
The 4R Photoslag project, promoted by the Fundación General CSIC’s ComFuturo programme, aims to convert what is currently a waste product (stainless steel slag) into a new material with self-cleaning and decontaminating properties, which makes it ideal for incorporation as an additive in construction materials. In this way, we could have pavements or buildings capable of reducing pollution in cities while at the same time making the most of an industrial waste.
