Disseminating knowledge of History

Slavery and the cultural legacy of Africa in the Caribbean is the title of the documentary directed by Consuelo Naranjo Orovio of the CSIC’s Institute of History, which has been supported by Cuenta la Ciencia, a grant programme of Fundación General CSIC to promote activities that disseminate and bring science closer to society, directed by CSIC researchers.

This documentary, which aims to raise awareness of one of the most important and shameful phenomena for humanity, the enslavement of more than twelve and a half million Africans who were taken to America, forced to work and live as slaves, is one of the materials for disseminating knowledge of history produced within the framework of the European project Connected Worlds: The Caribbean, Origin of Modern World (ConnecCaribbean), led by the researcher Naranjo Orovio.

Other elements of this European project, whose aim is to contribute to making societies more tolerant by banishing social and cultural prejudices, and which are supported by the Cuenta la Ciencia programme, are the exhibition Slavery and the cultural legacy of Africa in the Caribbean, which will be inaugurated at the Museum of America on the 8th of October 2021, and a book of the same title, edited by Consuelo Naranjo and Miguel Ángel Puig-Samper of the CSIC’s Institute of History.
