Seminar on Ageing

25-10-2010

On Tuesday 16 November the Fundación General CSIC will be holding a seminar on ageing at the headquarters of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), at which the various activities being carried out by the Foundation in its Ageing, Disability and Illness strategic line will be presented. These include the launch of the call for “Proyectos Cero” project proposals on ageing, sponsored by Obra Social “la Caixa”. A line up of leading experts on the topic of ageing will be present, and will explore the various facets of the phenomenon in Spain from the viewpoint of their areas of specialisation.

The seminar will be subdivided into three blocks. The first, block will be devoted to the Fundación General CSIC’s strategic line and will focus on the report on ageing in Spain (Informe sobre el envejecimiento en España) written by the FGCSIC’s Analysis Unit; the thematic issue of the Foundation’s journal Lychnos; and, in particular, the call for for “Proyectos Cero” proposals on Ageing, sponsored by Obra Social “la Caixa”, which will be presented by the institution’s Director, together with the President and Director of the Fundación General CSIC, Rafael Rodrigo and Javier Rey, respectively.

The second and third blocks will give researchers in the field their turn to have their say, starting with a lecture by Maria Blasco, Deputy Director of the Centro Nacional de investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO). The final block will take the form of a round table, moderated by journalist Javier Grégori (Cadena Ser), in which developments in the field of ageing will be discussed from the biomedical, psychosocial and technological perspectives, with input from Herminia Peraita (UNED), José Miguel Azcoitia (Tecnalia), Isabel Varela-Nieto (CSIC) and Antonio Martínez Maroto (IMSERSO).

The fall in the birth rate, combined with falling mortality at advanced ages, challenges our societies to achieve greater longevity without an increase in the number of ill and dependant persons, and that longer life spans are characterised by good health and activity. Fundación General CSIC has aligned itself with the main national and international research policies to promote activities framed by its Ageing, Disability and Illness strategic line.
