Frontier research

49

Frontiers is one of the Fundación General CSIC’s four strategic lines, along with Threatened species, Ageing, disability and illness, and Human ecology and development. Science in the 21st century faces numerous challenges: many questions remain to be answered and, meanwhile, new ones continue to emerge. As John Maddox wrote in his paper “What remains to be discovered,» published in Nature, «science is not reaching its end, but is closer to the beginning than ever.»

If we had to give a definition of frontier research, we would say that it is research looking for answers at the edge of knowledge. It deals in projects addressing issues surrounded by significant controversy in the scientific community or the sphere in which they are being undertaken; research that asks questions that are difficult to answer unless unconventional approaches are taken and that is characterised by a high degree of uncertainty as to its success. This video gives viewers a closer look at frontier research.
