To mark the International Year of Research into Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, the Fundación General CSIC has taken part in the production of a programme called «Claves de Alzheimer» (the keys to Alzheimer’s), which will be shown on the Internet-TV channel Indagando.tv on 8 April. The programme will be rebroadcast online weekly on Fridays at 10 am. The programme lasts 20 minutes and will be repeated every two hours.

Claves de AlzheimerOver the course of thirteen programmes, the keys to the disease will be examined, and the latest lines of basic and clinical research reviewed. The programmes will also look at the social and health-care aspects of the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the primary cause of dementia in persons aged over 65. From this age, the prevalence of the disease increases exponentially. Increasing lifespan and the progressively ageing population makes the number of people affected likely to rise to the point that it may reach epidemic proportions. Progress is currently being made towards understanding the disorder, but its origins remain unknown and there is as yet no treatment available to halt or slow its course.

Alzheimer Internacional 2011 is an initiative promoted by the Fundación Reina Sofía and the Fundación Pasqual Maragall, with support from the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality, the Ministry of the Economy, the Fundación Centro de Enfermedades Neurológicas and the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.
